Without their team leader Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal have recovered from a goal down and won 2-1 against Mexico in extra time, to get the third-place at the Confederations Cup.
Thanks to Pepe’s volley Portugal have made 1:1 and sent the game into extra time. The Sporting Lisbon striker Adrien Silva scored a penalty in the 104th-minute, awarded to Portugal after a handball by the Mexico’s Miguel Layun.
Before the game Cedric Soares has told the media before Sunday’s Confederations Cup third-place match between Portugal and Mexico, that this game is an opportunity for the Portuguese team to demonstrate that they are more than “Ronaldo + 10 others”.
However, no matter what Soares or anyone would say Ronaldo just was’t there to help his team at the Confederations Cup 3rd place playoff.
Cristiano Ronaldo did not leave on its own. He has got permission from the Portuguese football association and the team’s manager Fernando Santos to leave after the semi-final that the Portuguese team lost to Chile on Wednesday to see his new-born twins. So, the the-still-Real Madrid superstar is on good terms with both his country and his team mates.
Portuguese are easy going people. I called some of my friends in Lisbon during the Portugal vs Mexico semifinal and asked few of them “Aren’t you a little bit pissed off to Ronaldo for leaving the team before this game?”. The first answer was “No, is OK. He has to meet is new-born sons… hahaha”.
Cedric Soares, who plays for Southampton has also said that Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken to his team mates before leaving. Shares added that he deserves to be praised for the fact that he had stayed and played in the tournament until the semifinal, as his newborn twins reported to have been born on June 8.
Ronaldo himself has taken to Twitter, before the playoff to show his support to his team mates saying “All together, on and off the field. Let’s go mates”!
