Jose Mourinho knows how to make fans to stand behind him. The news that he wants to spend the next 15 years of his managerial career at Manchester United is definitely not one that Chelsea’s fans would appreciate. Man United fans would like it, however.
In an interview with the ESPN FC the Portuguese manager said that he wants to stay at Old Trafford for 15 years and restore the stability of Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign as manager at Old Trafford. Mourinho presented himself as a visionary for Manchester United, something that he hopes to put him in the footsteps of Sir Alex Ferguson.
“My job is much more than what I do on the pitch and the results that my team gets at the weekend”
“I am ready for this. I am ready for the next 15, I would say. Here? Yes, why not? I have to admit that it is very difficult because of the pressure around our jobs, everybody putting pressure on managers and things that people say – that we have to win – but in reality only one can win and every year it is getting more difficult”, stated Mourinho.
He said that he wants to demonstrate that his work “goes further than the football results, that it goes to areas that people don’t think of as a manager’s job”. In my vision, my job is much more than what I do on the pitch and the results that my team gets at the weekend.
Mourinho knows how to make things going his direction?!
Jose Mourinho has created controversy wherever he worked as a manager. At the same time he has always been good in managing expectations and making the football club’s hierarchy to accept his point of view. His first season at United was a disappointment when it comes to the Premier League. united have been a little bit better than that average teams in the league, despite spending big in the summer of 2016.
However, Jose Mourinho has focused on winning the biggest trophy he could last season and he has succeeded on that, as Manchester United went to beat Ajax in the UEFA Europa League final. So, at the end of the last season United fans have been much happier with the UEFA Cup, than they would be with a second or third place finish in the Premier League table and no trophy in the club’s banquet.
Still, talking about his long term future at Old Trafford is a risky business. Manchester Untied is not just a huge club in terms of fanbase. It is month the world’s top 5 sporting clubs in terms of value with its $3.69 billion valuation. Some ranks even put untied at the top of the list.
Coaching a club like United means that Mourinho should deliver something each and every season. This is what Alex Ferguson has been doing for 22 years, since 1991, when then Red Devils won the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Sir Alex has spend 27 years working at Old Trafford.
On a contrary, Jose Mourinho has never spent more than 3 seasons in charge of any club. He has never left his contract to expire and either left in search for a new challenge or was dismissed by the clubs he managed.
Now when he is in charge of Manchester United, Mourinho believes that he is at the club, that has a culture of supporting their managers.
“People got used to it; people understood the great consequences of that stability. After David and Mr. Van Gaal, I come to my second year and hopefully I can stay and give that stability that the club wants. I will try, but again, I will have to try to deserve that, but that’s what I try every day that I work”, told ESPN FC the Portuguese manager.
He has also said that he things that think Sir Alex’s career is unique. “I don’t think it is possible to emulate. Nobody is going to be in the same club for so many years, be in the same league for so many years. I think Wenger will be the last with a similar story in terms of staying at a club for so many years”, explained Mourinho, suggesting that both Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger have been part of a tradition which no longer applies in the modern football.
Without saying it directly Jose has somehow hinted that he is “A Special one”, by suggesting that he would deserve to stay at Manchester United, based on the success he would bring to the club. “You have success, you stay in the club. You don’t have success, you don’t stay”, summarized Mourinho.
