Nemanja Matic, one of the most prolific defensive midfielder in the Premier League since 2014 has moved to Manchester United on a £40 million deal and signed 3-year deal with the Red Devils.
“Manchester is one of the biggest clubs in the world. Also, my wish was to train with Jose Mourinho and, of course, when you have a coach like him and a club like Manchester is, you don’t need to think a lot so my decision was very easy” said Matic in his first interview for the MUFC website.
Matic, who has been called a “Jose Mourinho player”, due to his strong defensive performances, which fit perfectly to the style played by the Portuguese manager, also said that he is happy to work with Mourinho again, called him “a great coach” and explained that when he worked with Mourinho he always managed to take the best out of him as a player. “I improve if I work with him, so I am very happy to be again with him, especially in this great club so I am happy because of that”, explained Matic.
“When the coach wants you to come to the club, it gives you more motivation, more possibility and I will try to, not try, I will, for sure, give my best to show that I deserve to be in this club and part of this group”, said the Serbian, who is expected to be the Man United’s first choice defensive midfielder.
Asked whether the current Manchester United team is ready to fight for the Premier League title Matic said “I think that this squad is ready because it is more mature, they already work with Jose for one year so they know what they have to do and I am sure that this season we can do many things”.
Nemanja Matic has been named in the PFA’s Premier League team of the year in 2015, the year when Chelsea won the Premier League title, under Mourinho.
In season 2016/2017 Matic has won 278 duels, at an average of 4.77, according to Opta stats. In the Chelsea’s 2014/2015 title winning season, Matic recorded an average 4 tackles per game and won 8 duels – a 50/50 contest, per game.
Antonio Conte has recently left the Matic out of Chelsea squad for the pre-season tour of the Far East and America and this prompted speculations that Matic would move away from Stamford Bridge. Conte has signed Tiemoue Bakayoko form from Monaco and it looked like that he would be his first choice defensive midfielder in season 2017/2018. Manchester United and Juventus have been heavily linked with the former Benfica midfielder but United eventually signed him.
