After being relegated from Premier League, Sunderland continued their awful form in Championship. Seven draws and only one win could only secure them last spot and everything started to fall apart for Sunderland. Few weeks ago Simon Grayson was sacked and new Sunderland manager is yet to be announced.
There was a talk that Michael O’Neill, Paul Heckingbottom or even Aitor Karanka can become a new Sunderland manager. They are all excellent managers, but one can say that latest news might be the best one for Sunderland fans. Chris Coleman left his job as a Wales manager after they failed to qualify for a World Cup in Russia. His new job at Sunderland is yet to be officially confirmed, but it all looks like Chris Coleman is next Sunderland manager.
Can Chris Coleman save Sunderland from going down?
After a tragic death of Gary Speed, Chris Coleman was appointed as manager of Wales’s national team. Even with everything that was happening at a time, he managed not only to get great results, but to get players on their feet too and give them motivation to achieve everything they did.
What Sunderland needs most is motivation, chance for those players to get together, play as a team and enjoy their football. Their squad might not have enough quality to fight for a promotion, but certainly they are strong enough not to be relegated again.
Chris Coleman might be the perfect man for this job. Although it’s a big risk for his career, he proved everyone with Wales that he can achieve great things, and he can prove it again with Sunderland. The fact that they are the last is not changing the fact that this season just started and there is still time for Sunderland to step up and get out of relegation zone.
Coleman’s tactics to improve Sunderland’s defence?
Under Chris Coleman, Wales played beautiful and attractive football, but they were also very strong at a back. Even though he often changed tactics, his defensive system was always strong and that is something that Sunderland really needs at a moment. They have been solid in attack, but they have conceded way too many goals which led them to their loosing run.
If Chris Coleman can manage to improve Sunderland’s defence and stop them from conceding that much before transfer window opens, he can get some good results and help Sunderland to get out of their relegation battle. With their attack being good, and if he gets the right tactics, Sunderland will continue to score as much as they already did. And with solid defensive system, and their good attack, they might finally grab a few wins.
Next few fixtures can help Coleman get Sunderland back on tracks?
Other than Aston Villa and Wolves, in next 6 games Sunderland will play against Burton, Reading, Fulham and Birmingham. Those games against some of the direct opponents should be a perfect test for Chris Coleman and great chance for Sunderland to finally go on winning run. They will need to find a motivation, work harder both in training and during the game, squad will need to give their best, and they have to win those games if they want to step up and get out of relegation zone.
Can Chris Coleman help them achieve that and is he the right man for this job? His tactics and leadership skills has already proved us what he is capable for, but results in next few games might be the only answer to that question.
