Transfer Talk

Alexis Sanchez – a hired gun, who cannot save their season?

The media reported that Manchester City are reluctant to pay the 35 million fee asked by Arsenal to allow Alexis Sanchez to leave the club this January. It looks like that the City’s unwillingness to pay the transfer fee and an astronomic salary demanded by the Chilean, creates an opportunity for Jose Mourinho?

According to the former England striker and current MOTD pundit Alan Shearer “It would be a huge coup for Manchester United if they snatch Alexis Sanchez from under Manchester City’s nose, because they know Blues boss Pep Guardiola has been chasing him for a while now”.

Which Manchester team needs Sanchez more?

Jose Mourinho has been always saying that he doesn’t speak about players who play for other clubs, but he has commented on Sanchez describing him as “phenomenal”. The main reason for Mourinho to court the Arsenal striker is that the Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United badly need talent as they look nothing but an average side this season.

Ii is not that Man United aren’t good team. They are second in the table and after Liverpool defeated their local rivals, there is another opportunity for United to try to win the Premier League. They just need a bit of a luck and more quality in the final third, which is something that Alexis Sanchez could bring to this Red Devil’s squad.

On the other hand Manchester City simply do not need the talented Chilean. Pep Guardiola team has managed to create a phenomenal team. The Sky Blues have a pace and their attack looks threatening. They would have easily draw or beaten Liverpool last Sunday, if the Jurgen Klopp side haven’t outperformed them. The only way to win against this Manchester City side is to get the ball and to attack all 90 minutes. This is exactly what the Jose Mourinho’s led Manchester United cannot do. They cannot attack. So, it makes sense for the United owners to dig deep into their pockets and to bring Sanchez to Old Trafford.

However, according to Alan Shearer, it makes sense for Alexis Sanchez to join Manchester City.

“He knows Guardiola from their time together at Barcelona and he also knows he would be joining the best team in the country, with the chance of winning lots of trophies this season and in the future too”, says the former England’s striker in a BBC commentary. Shearer also stresses that Alexis Sanchez will not be a star player in Etihad. “He would not be an automatic choice there. He would be rotated and would not play every week, or certainly not as often as he would at United”, says the former Blackburn and newcastle number 9.

Alexis Sanchez obviously wants to win trophies, but he wants to do that as a regular starter and as a star player in his team. Being one of the team leaders is very important for the Chilean. When Barcelona bought Luis Suarez he has simply refused to accept the notion that he could sit on the bench and be used as a substitute at Camp Not, so he signed for Arsenal. Now, Sanche would probably like more the idea to be one of the Manchester United’s leading players within the next two or three season, instead of signing for City and being rotated in the Pep Guardiola’s led team.

Jose Mourinho has told the media that Manchester United does not “believe a lot in the January market”. “We don’t believe in signing a player just to sign a player, just to do something, we don’t believe in that” also said the Portuguese, but then added “What we believe really is there are some players in football world if you have the chance to sign them in January, in March or in July, you have to try and that’s it.”

Ironically, Alexis Sanchez transfer would not do much for Manchester City of Manchester united this season. The Sky Blues look destined to win the title, while the Red Devils are very likely to be in the top four, with very good chances to finish second. So, whatever Sanchez would do for any of the Manchester clubs, it would be next season.
