There is always a lot of action when it comes to Championship football on Boxing Day, but this time we have a lot of direct opponent both on top and at the bottom. We can easily expect a lot of goals in this round as we have very exciting fixtures on Wednesday. These are our Championship predictions for Boxing Day.
Birmingham City vs Stoke City
Stoke City is finally getting back in form, but Birmingham has been excellent this whole season. It’s not only that Birmingham has been scoring a lot, but they have been keeping a lot of clean sheets lately. Stoke City is still struggling to be good both in attack and defence and I would expect them to struggle against Birmingham City. Garry Monk might end this year with his team being in play-offs and with players like Lukas Jutkiewicz being in excellent form, I don’t think that they will miss on that opportunity.
Birmingham City to win: 2-1
Bolton Wanderers vs Rotherham United
Bolton is having a chance to get all three points after they’ve lost against Brentford on Saturday, but the same thing can be said about Rotherham as they’ve conceded 4 against West Bromwich Albion. For me, the most important thing in this match has to be Rotherham’s away record, they still doesn’t have a single away win and I am not sure if they can win this one. I expect both teams to score, but in matches like this, draw can be the most likely outcome.
Bristol City vs Brentford
This simply has to be a win for Bristol City. I mentioned in last article about Brentford that they have to try defensive football. Well they did it against Bolton and it worked. However, Bristol City is much better in attack and even if Brentford try to defend, once they concede a goal they will have to open up and chase the result. Bristol City has been unbeaten in December, and they have played against Birmingham, Norwich and Derby County, so this should be an easy game for them. If they score early in the game, there will be a lot of action on both sides, but I expect them to be more careful and maybe try to keep a clean sheet.
Bristol City to win: 2-0
Leeds United vs Blackburn Rovers
It’s been beautiful to watch Leeds United this season, and after their last match against Aston Villa, they really deserve the first place. They have won their last six matches, and although they have problems with injuries, they will be looking to continue that winning run. Luckily for them, Blackburn Rovers are hitting the bad form and it is hard to say that they can compete against Leeds United. Kemar Roofe scored a late winner for Leeds against Aston Villa and I expect their main striker to continue that form on Wednesday.
Leeds United to win: 2-0
Middlesbrough vs Sheffield Wednesday
Jos Luhukay has been sacked as Sheffield Wednesday manager few days ago and it is a very reasonable decision after their bad run. Tony Pulis made an away win against Reading in their last match and they are back on top now. For me, Sheffield United doesn’t have such a good squad to compete against top teams, no matter who their manager is. I expect Britt Assombalonga and Jordan Hugill to both finally start in attack.
Middlesbrough to win: 1-0
Millwall vs Reading
Millwall has been the worst team away from home this season, but when it comes to home performance, they have been excellent. Reading has appointed a new manager, José Manuel Gomes, and although they can expect a lot from him, I wouldn’t expect him to win his first match. Considering the fact that these are direct opponents, and that Millwall is conceding a lot at home, I expect a lot of goals in this one. Matches like this one are a great opportunity for Millwall, so they have to go for a win.
Millwall to win: 2-1
Norwich City vs Nottingham Forest
Norwich has been excellent this season and although they have lost their first place to Leeds United, they are making the gap between them and their opponents. Nottingham Forest is also having an excellent season, but they haven’t been in such a good form lately. Both teams are great defensively, so I don’t expect a lot of goals in this one, but Teemu Pukki has proven to be an excellent striker for Norwich City and I expect him to continue his form on Wednesday.
Norwich City to win: 1-0
Preston North End vs Hull City
Both teams are in good form considering the fact that they have been struggling at the bottom for quite some time this season. Preston managed to hit the form earlier, while Hull has started winning only recently. I expect both teams to score in this one, they have been scoring a lot lately and they are not so organized at the back. If one had to win, I would go for Preston, but for me draw should be the most likely outcome of this match.
Queens Park Rangers vs Ipswich Town
Ipswich has managed to get four points in their last two matches, but I won’t expect them to win this one. Queens Park Rangers have been excellent this season, they’ve managed to get in fight for play-offs and they would be even higher up the table if there wasn’t for their bad start. Ipswich is still conceding far too many and it’s great that they’ve managed to start getting good results at home, but winning an away game against Queens Park Rangers is a hard challenge.
Queens Park Rangers to win: 2-1
Sheffield United vs Derby County
One of two matches that will have TV coverage on Boxing Day is a clash between Sheffield United and Derby County. Sheffield United is far from a good team at home, but they have lost a lot of points lately and they have to go for a win. The same thing can be said about Derby County as they are in similar form. These are direct opponents and there will certainly be a lot of action on both sides and both teams will probably score. Considering the fact that both teams haven’t been in great form lately, I expect them to split points.
Swansea City vs Aston Villa
Aston Villa has improved their away record under Dean Smith, but their recent form has been awful. Luckily for them, Swansea City is also struggling to get points, but they are also struggling to score. Aston Villa is still a second best attack in the league and they will certainly score a lot on Wednesday. The fact that Swansea City is struggling to score might be very important in this match as they will have a hard time competing with Aston Villa.
Aston Villa to win: 1-2
West Bromwich Albion vs Wigan Athletic
For West Bromwich Albion this has to be an easy match. Their 4-0 win against Rotherham has to be a big boost for a team and considering the fact that Wigan has been awful away from home this season. West Bromwich Albion has the best attack in the league, they have scored 50 goals in 23 matches so far and I expect them to continue that form on Wednesday against Wigan Athletic.
West Bromwich Albion to win: 3-0
