Once again, we will see a lot of action in Championship as a lot of direct opponents will play each other this weekend. Leeds United will certainly stay first, but can Sheffield United keep their second place? Here are our predictions for this weekend in Championship.
Norwich City vs Birmingham City
Birmingham City is getting out of form again and it’s mainly because they are struggling to find a goal. Luckily for them, Norwich City has been in similar, if not worse, form in last few matches. When it comes to Norwich, they have lost their second place, but at least they’ve managed to get a point in away game against West Bromwich Albion. They concede a lot of goals, especially at home, so I expect this to be a very exciting match with both sides finding a back of the net. Considering that both teams are in bad form currently, Norwich is having an advantage of playing at home, and they have been a better team since the start of the season.
Norwich City to win: 2-1
Aston Villa vs Hull City
One thing that has to be said first is the fact that Hull City is currently a team with best form in Championship. They are scoring a lot of goals, they are unbeaten in their last nine league matches and they have a six game winning run. Aston Villa on the other side has been in awful form lately. They have only one win in their last five matches and they seem to be struggling to score. If you look only at the form than you should expect Hull City to win. However, Aston Villa has probably the best attack in the league, they are aiming for play-offs this season and they simply can’t afford to lose a home game against Hull City.
Aston Villa to win: 2-0
Blackburn Rovers vs Ipswich Town
I am absolutely certain that Blackburn Rovers are having a better team than Ipswich Town. They have been in better form this season, they were even fighting for play-offs at one point and they have been quite solid at home. However, they have played 120 minutes on Tuesday against Newcastle and ended up losing that match. They will certainly be tired on Saturday, and I don’t expect Ipswich to surprise and get a win, but this game can easily end up with both keepers keeping a clean sheet.
Derby County vs Reading
Same as Blackburn Rovers, Derby County has played 120 minutes in FA Cup against Southampton. However, they’ve managed to get a win and their squad has more options in every position so Frank Lampard is able to rotate. Reading has not impressed me with what they’ve done under new manager, although they’ve managed to grab a home win against Nottingham Forest. They have only won one away match so far this season and I don’t expect them to change that record now.
Derby County to win: 2-0
Middlesbrough vs Millwall
Middlesbrough has been improving the only part of their team that doesn’t work great – their attack. They are five points safe in play-offs which are more than a gap between them and a second place. It is fair to say that everyone should expect Middlesbrough to win this one. Millwall is still struggling at the bottom, they have lost their last match against Blackburn Rovers and they and they have only one away win this season.
Middlesbrough to win: 1-0
Nottingham Forest vs Bristol City
It will be great to see what Martin O’Neill has to bring to Nottingham Forest. I don’t expect a style of football to be changed, but I certainly expect more wins. This match will be a good test for him, they are playing against direct opponent and Bristol City has been in excellent form lately. It is fair to say that both teams are fighting for play-offs, so both teams will be looking for a win in this one. I don’t expect a lot of goals in this match, but I do expect both sides to find a back of the net.
Queens Park Rangers vs Preston North End
Queens Park Rangers are still in fight for play-offs and they have truly been one of the most exciting teams in Championship this season. They are not in their best form, especially after they’ve lost their last match against Sheffield United and I’m afraid that they might do it again. Preston has been in awful form this season, they are on the losing run and if they don’t win as soon as they can, they might end up fighting for survival again. I expect them to work really hard on Saturday and do their best to finally secure a win.
Preston North End to win: 1-2
Rotherham United vs Brentford
Considering the fact that they are going down all the way to relegation zone, Brentford has been in excellent form lately. They are unbeaten in their last five matches and we are all aware of the team that they have. Rotherham United on the other side managed to win only one game in their last five and they are really struggling to survive this season. Brentford has been great in attack this season and I expect them to continue that form on Saturday.
Brentford to win: 0-2
Sheffield Wednesday vs Wigan Athletic
Sheffield Wednesday has been awful lately and Steve Bruce will be looking to get his first league win with his new team. Their home performance has been far from excellent this season, as only Reading, Ipswich and Bolton have less points at home than Sheffield Wednesday. However, Wigan has been worse when it comes to away performance as they have won only one away game so far this season. I don’t expect a lot of goals in this one, but I am expecting a home side to win.
Sheffield Wednesday to win: 1-0
Stoke City vs Leeds United
Nathan Jones is still waiting for his first win with Stoke City, but it’s hard to expect his first win in Championship to be against Leeds United. There has been a lot going on with Marcelo Bielsa sending a man to spy on Derby County training ground before their game last weekend, but I don’t think that all of that will affect Leeds United negatively and I am 100 percent certain that they will be able to pull another win on Saturday.
Leeds United to win: 1-2
Swansea City vs Sheffield United
Sheffield United is once again on the second spot and they will be working hard to stay there. A trip to Wales is always tough, but Chris Wilder has a squad full of experienced players. Swansea City is far from their best form lately and their home record has been awful this season. I don’t expect a lot of excitement in this one, but I think that Sheffield United will try to control the game and create more chances.
Sheffield United to win: 0-1
Bolton Wanderers vs West Bromwich Albion
There is no doubt about who is a better team in this match. West Bromwich Albion has the best attack in the league and they are hoping to grab the second place as soon as they can. They have failed to get a win in their last match against Norwich City, but they will certainly work hard to get all three points against Bolton. A home side has been in awful form lately and I can’t see them staying in the league this season.
West Bromwich Albion to win: 0-3
